Indianapolis, Ind. –A new study released by the U.S. Department of Education found that students who took part in online instruction performed better on average than students who took the same course through face-to-face instruction. Additionally, students who took “blended” courses, which are courses that combine parts of online learning and face-to-face instruction, performed best out of all three groups.
Other notable facts from the study include the importance of technology. The report states that when students are given the ability to control their studies, it has a positive effect on their learning. Time was another factor that impacted performance. The more time a student spent on their online courses, the better the outcome.
"Online education provides additional opportunities. It gives people greater opportunity for flexibility, for experiential learning, for illustrating things in multiple ways such as visualization,” says Diana G. Oblinger, president of Educause.
